The Pudukkottai Princely State was a southern Indian kingdom that later became a princely state under British suzerainty, ruled by the Thondaimaan dynasty. Coinage played an important cultural role, reflecting devotion as well as authority. The Amman Kaasu, popularly known as Vijaya Toll, was named after Goddess Brihadh Ambal (Periya Naachiyaar), worshipped at the historic Tirugokarnam Shiva temple. These tiny copper coins were widely used in local transactions and temple offerings. The Telugu legend “Vijaya,” meaning victory, symbolized prosperity and divine blessing. Issued over several decades, this coin represents the blend of religion, regional identity, and everyday economy in Pudukkottai’s numismatic tradition.
