Obverse: Persian legend, al-sultan al-azam ala ud-dunya wa’l din.
Reverse: Crude horseman riding to right; Persian legend “Masud Shah” placed above the horseman at the top field.
Ala al-din Masud Shah ruled the Delhi Sultanate from 1242 to 1246 CE during a period of intense factional politics among the Turkish nobles. He was the son of Rukn ud-Din Firuz and the grandson of Shams ud-Din Iltutmish. Masud ascended the throne after the assassination of Sultan Muizuddin Bahram Shah, following the reign of his aunt Razia Sultana. Contemporary chroniclers describe Masud Shah as an indulgent and ineffective ruler, more interested in pleasure than governance. He showed little interest in administration, military campaigns, or architectural patronage, and no major buildings are credited to him. His reign saw no significant external battles, as real power remained with the nobles. In June 1246, the same nobles deposed him, imprisoned him in Delhi, and shortly afterward had him murdered. His tomb is not clearly identified today, suggesting a modest or unmarked burial. He was succeeded by his cousin Nasiruddin Mahmud.
Coinage of Masud Shah is scarce and reflects the unstable politics of his reign. His billon jitals carry lofty Persian titles but are crudely struck, often featuring a simple horseman type, indicating hurried minting and weak central control.
