Alauddin Khalji (Ala al-Din Muhammad II, r. 1296–1316 CE) was one of the most powerful rulers of the Delhi Sultanate and the second sultan of the Khalji Dynasty. Known for his strong administration, military reforms, and expansionist ambitions, he defeated several Rajput kingdoms and successfully repelled repeated Mongol invasions, securing India’s northwest frontier. Alauddin introduced strict economic and market reforms to control prices and strengthen his empire’s economy. His coinage, mostly in billon and gold, reflected both Persian and Indian influences with inscriptions in Persian and Devanagari scripts. One of the most famous events of his reign was the siege of Chittor in 1303 CE, symbolizing his power and dominance in medieval Indian history.
