This silver rupee was issued during the reign of Jalal ud-Din Muhammad Akbar, but its true historical importance lies in its connection to the rebellion of his son, Jahangir. In 1600–1604 CE, Prince Salim (later Jahangir) declared independence at Allahabad and assumed royal authority while Akbar was still alive. During this period, coins continued to bear Akbar’s name to maintain political legitimacy, yet they carried distinctive features reflecting Jahangir’s control.

The famous “Hamisha” couplet, meaning “Forever,” symbolized continuity and divine sanction of rule, subtly asserting Jahangir’s claim without openly breaking Mughal tradition. Allahabad became the focal mint of this rebellion, producing limited quantities of silver rupees that differed stylistically from regular imperial issues. These coins illustrate the delicate balance between rebellion and legitimacy in Mughal politics. Due to their short striking period and political sensitivity, rebellion issues with the Hamisha couplet are considered very scarce and historically significant within Mughal numismatics.
