Part of the short-lived Portuguese Indian escudo system introduced in 1958, this 60 Centavos nickel brass coin served as a regular circulation denomination in the colonies of Goa, Daman, and Diu. The escudo replaced the older Rupia at a fixed rate, and coins like this reflected both colonial administration and local commerce under Portuguese authority. Struck in Lisbon at the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, these coins remained in use until demonetization in 1962 after India’s annexation of Portuguese territories.
