Shahjahan II (Rafi-ud-Daulah) ascended the Mughal throne in 1719 CE during one of the most chaotic phases of imperial history. He was placed on the throne by the influential Sayyid Brothers after the deposition of Farrukhsiyar, reflecting how emperors had become instruments in the hands of powerful nobles. Shahjahan II possessed little real authority, as administrative, military, and financial control rested entirely with court factions. His reign lasted only a few months, marked by insecurity, palace intrigue, and constant fear of assassination. Ultimately, he was deposed, imprisoned, and soon after died, symbolizing the tragic fate of late Mughal rulers who held the title of emperor without power. His short and ineffective reign clearly illustrates the collapse of centralized Mughal sovereignty and the transition toward noble-dominated governance.

This silver rupee, struck at Shahjahanabad Dar-ul-Khilafa mint, carries full imperial titles asserting legitimacy. Due to Shahjahan II’s extremely brief reign, such coins are exceptionally rare and historically significant.
