Sankara Varman, son of the great Avanti Varman, was one of the most aggressive rulers of the Utpala dynasty of Kashmir. Ruling from 883 to 901 CE, he transformed Kashmir into a major regional power through continuous military campaigns. His armies advanced beyond the valley, subjugating Trigarta (modern Kangra) and extending influence as far as Gujarat. Contemporary chronicles, especially Kalhana’s Rajatarangini, describe him as brave and warlike, but also intensely avaricious, imposing heavy taxation to finance his ambitions. His reign ended abruptly during an expedition beyond the Indus, where he was killed by a mountaineer. This AE stater reflects royal authority and religious legitimacy, pairing the ruler’s name with divine imagery, a hallmark of Kashmir’s early medieval coinage.
