Kanishka I (c. 127–150 CE) was the greatest ruler of the Kushan Empire and is remembered for transforming it into a vast, prosperous, and culturally diverse power. His empire extended from Central Asia to northern India, controlling key Silk Route trade networks that linked Rome, Persia, and China. Kanishka was a great patron of religion and culture, famously supporting Buddhism and convening the Fourth Buddhist Council in Kashmir. Under his rule, Gandhara art flourished, blending Greek, Iranian, and Indian elements, and the Kushans adopted a highly organized administrative and monetary system.
Kanishka’s coinage reflects this cosmopolitan vision. His copper issues, including large AE tetradrachms, display Bactrian legends and diverse deities such as Athsho, symbolizing wealth, fire, and metallurgy, and emphasizing imperial authority and economic strength..
