Nasir-ud-Din Qabacha was a prominent early 13th-century ruler who governed Sindh and Multan during a politically turbulent phase of the Indian subcontinent. Originally a trusted slave-general of Sultan Muhammad of Ghor, Qabacha emerged as an independent ruler after the collapse of Ghurid authority. His reign coincided with the rise of the Delhi Sultanate under Qutb-ud-Din Aibak and later Iltutmish, with whom Qabacha remained in constant conflict. Strategically positioned along the Indus trade routes, Sindh and Multan were economically vital, enabling Qabacha to maintain autonomy for over two decades. His coinage, including the scarce AE Jital, reflects a transitional monetary system, blending Islamic authority with strong local Indian symbolism through Nagari legends and indigenous motifs. Qabacha’s resistance ended in 1228 CE when he was defeated by Iltutmish and met his death, marking the firm expansion of Delhi Sultanate control into the Indus region.
