The Shunga Kingdom emerged after the decline of the Mauryan Empire, founded by Pushyamitra Shunga around 187 BC. The dynasty is known for restoring Brahmanical traditions, strengthening regional powers, and defending northern India against Indo-Greek incursions. Under the Shungas, art and religion flourished, including early developments linked with the Bharhut and Sanchi sculptural traditions. Their rule marked a transition period in ancient India, with smaller kingdoms asserting autonomy while maintaining vibrant cultural growth.

This cast copper Kakani reflects that evolving regional economy. The obverse shows an elephant with a rider—symbolizing royal authority and military readiness. The reverse depicts a three-arched hill with crescent, a common Shunga religious motif. At 1.96 g and 13.76 mm, this Mitch AC# 4366 type is very fine and scarce.
