This copper Falus of Muhammad Adil Shah, ruler of the Bijapur Sultanate from 1627 to 1656 CE, belongs to the artistic Fourth Series featuring the elegant dotted-leaf motif. Muhammad Adil Shah was one of the most culturally influential Deccan kings, known for his architectural patronage, including the iconic mausoleum Gol Gumbaz, famous for its massive dome and whispering gallery. His reign maintained Bijapur’s political strength despite pressure from the Mughals and rising Maratha power. The coin’s inscriptions praise the ruler’s grandeur, reading on the obverse that “the world gained beauty and dignity from Muhammad Adil Shah,” while the reverse invokes the spiritual blessings of Prophet Muhammad. This extremely scarce falus reflects Bijapur’s refined calligraphy and distinctive Deccani artistry.
