Ghiyath al-Din Tughlaq, founder of the Tughluq dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, ruled from 1320 to 1325 CE and restored stability after years of internal chaos. Originally named Ghazi Malik, he rose from a military commander to the throne by defeating the Khalji usurper Khusrau Khan. As Sultan, Ghiyath al-Din focused on strengthening administration, securing frontiers, and improving revenue systems. He reinforced the frontiers against Mongol threats and expanded authority in Bengal and the Deccan. Known for his discipline and justice, he rebuilt infrastructure—roads, forts, and irrigation works—and emphasized law and order across the empire. His silver Tanka coins from Hadrat Delhi Mint reflect his royal titles such as al-sultan al-ghazi and ghiyath al-dunya wa’l-din, showing his image as a victorious and divinely-guided ruler. His reign ended suddenly in 1325 when he died in a canopy collapse, after which his son Muhammad bin Tughlaq succeeded him.
