Shams ud-Din Iltutmish (r. 1210–1235 CE), the foremost ruler of the Delhi Mamluk Sultanate, consolidated Qutb al-Din Aibak’s legacy and stabilized the empire from Bengal to the Indus. A former slave purchased by Muhammad Ghori’s nobles, he rose to become Sultan and issued coins in copper, billon, silver, and limited gold. His silver Tanka became a monetary standard. His billon Jitals often show the horseman type with Nagari legends. He built the Qutb Minar’s upper storeys and strengthened Delhi as the capital. Iltutmish named Raziya his heir, bypassing Rukn al-Din. After his campaigns in Bengal and Ranthambore, he was buried in his exquisite tomb near the Qutb complex.
