Jagadhri of Buria – Sikh Chieftainships – Copper Takka

Obverse: Local Sikh-style device with stylized motifs typical of the Buria Jagir issues (details often irregular due to crude minting).

Reverse: Abstract legend elements; flan too small for complete reading, consistent with contemporary Buria emissions.

The Buria–Jagadhri chiefship emerged as an important Sikh-held territory in mid-18th-century Haryana. Founded by Nanan Singh of Jhawal Mandan (a Jat), along with Bhag Singh and Rai Singh—both Bhangi Sikhs—the chieftains seized the fort of Buria in 1764 after its abandonment by Lachmi Narain, an officer of Zian Khan, Governor of Sirhind. Through this takeover, the region evolved into a semi-autonomous Sikh-controlled estate with its own copper coinage for local trade.

By 1829, Jagadhri Jagir lapsed into direct British control. The Rani of Dialgarh remained one of the few protected independent chiefs until her death in 1852, after which her jagir also lapsed. Buria itself was further reduced to an ordinary jagir in 1849. Surviving copper Takkas from this period—especially with well-preserved flan shape—are very scarce, making this piece an important example of late-Sikh-era local coinage.
