Shah Jahan I, one of the greatest Mughal emperors, ruled from 1628 to 1658 CE (1037–1068 AH). His reign marked the zenith of Mughal art, architecture, and administrative refinement. This copper 1 Dam (Falus) dated 1039 AH was struck at the Bairata mint, a region active in producing copper coinage for local circulation. The obverse carries the elegant tughra-style inscription “sahib-i-qiran-i-sani,” a title honoring Shah Jahan as the “Second Lord of the Auspicious Conjunction,” symbolizing imperial glory and cosmic fortune. The reverse gives the mint name and year of issue. Coins from Bairata are comparatively scarce, especially in higher grades. This piece reflects the stable economy of Shah Jahan’s era and aligns with his broader efforts to strengthen regional mints and maintain uniform currency across the empire.
