Sher Shah Suri, founder of the Sur Empire (r. 1540–1545 AD), introduced a well-structured coinage system. His copper Dam or Paisa served as standard small-denomination currency across North India. Weighing around 20 grams, these coins often bore inscriptions in Persian and were struck in regional mints. Sher Shah’s reforms laid the foundation for Mughal monetary practices later on.
